On Saturday, November 9, 2024, the YMCA’s Texas Youth and Government Houston District Conference brought together a passionate group of students for a day of inspiration, competition and civic engagement. This annual event has a rich history, dating back to 1936, and continues to empower young leaders by providing them with opportunities to explore model government, develop leadership skills and become lifelong advocates for their communities.
This year’s conference welcomed 192 delegates from across the Houston area, all vying for a coveted spot at the 2025 State Conference in Austin, Texas. Students showcased their talents in various competitive sections, including the State Affairs Forum, Judicial Appellate, Judicial Mock Trial, Legislative Assembly and Media.
A Day of Leadership, Debate, and Inspiration
The event began with an engaging fireside chat featuring Kendric D. Jones, Precinct 3 Commissioner. Jones, a champion of local leadership, inspired the audience with his powerful message:
“You can be the change in which you want to see in the stars.”
His words resonated deeply with the delegates, energizing them for a day filled with spirited debates, thoughtful discussions, and a renewed sense of purpose. Jones reminded everyone in attendance that they have the power to create meaningful change—not only in their own communities but also on a broader scale.
Showcasing Skills: Delegates in Action
Throughout the day, delegates demonstrated exceptional preparation, critical thinking and passion for civic engagement. Each competitive section offered a unique platform for students to shine:
- Legislative Assembly: Delegates debated proposed bills with vigor and precision.
- Media: Students highlighted the power of storytelling, crafting compelling narratives about the day’s events.
- Judicial Mock Trial and Appellate: These sessions challenged participants to present legal arguments and think on their feet.
- State Affairs Forum: Delegates tackled pressing issues impacting their communities and the state of Texas.
The level of talent, dedication, and leadership on display was nothing short of extraordinary. These students are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are already making their voices heard and taking on influential roles today.
Volunteers: The Backbone of the Conference
This event would not have been possible without the efforts of over 40 dedicated volunteers. From organizing sessions to mentoring delegates and ensuring everything ran smoothly, these individuals were instrumental in creating a positive and seamless experience for all. Their commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders is truly commendable.
Looking Ahead: The State Conference Awaits
After a day of rigorous competition and collaboration, the delegates left the conference with enhanced skills, stronger connections and a deep sense of accomplishment. The announcement of those advancing to the State Conference in Austin will be made later this month, but every participant has already made Houston proud.
For everyone who participated, spectated or volunteered, the 2024 Houston District Conference was a powerful reminder that youth civic engagement is thriving in Texas.
