YMCA Early Care and After School Programs
A new school year brings new routines, new friendships and plenty of opportunities for children to learn and grow. For busy families, finding quality care that supports a child’s development while giving parents peace of mind is an important part of starting the year off right.
The YMCA of Greater Houston’s Early Care and After School programs are designed to do more than provide a safe place for children. They create welcoming environments where kids can learn, build confidence, stay active, develop important life skills and discover new interests—all while being supported by caring, experienced staff.
Early Care: Helping Little Learners Grow
The early years are filled with incredible growth and discovery. YMCA Early Care serves children from 6 weeks through 5 years at three convenient locations, providing age-appropriate experiences that support children’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional development.
Our programs use the research-based Creative Curriculum to create engaging learning experiences while recognizing that every child develops at their own pace.
Infant Care: 6 Weeks to 17 Months
For infants, every interaction is an opportunity to learn. Our caring staff provides nurturing routines and developmentally appropriate experiences that encourage healthy growth and exploration.
From tummy time and sensory experiences to early language development and social interaction, infants are supported as they reach important developmental milestones. Parents also receive regular updates to stay connected to their child’s day.
Toddler Care: 18 to 35 Months
Toddlers are constantly learning, exploring and becoming more independent. Our toddler program provides a balance of responsive care, play-based learning and consistent routines that help children feel secure while developing new skills.
Children have opportunities to build language, social and self-help skills while exploring their environment and learning to interact with others. Our staff works with families to support each child’s individual developmental journey.
Preschool: 36 Months to 5 Years
Preschool is an exciting time when children begin developing the skills and confidence they’ll carry into their school years. Through hands-on experiences and creative exploration, children build foundational skills in areas such as literacy, mathematics, science, language, physical development, the arts and social-emotional development.
The goal is to help children become confident, creative thinkers while preserving the fun, curiosity and wonder that make early childhood so special.
All YMCA Early Care programs are licensed by the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, Child Care Licensing.
After School: Making the Most of Every Afternoon
The school day may be over, but learning and growing don’t have to stop. YMCA After School Care provides children with meaningful experiences during the afternoon, right where families need them—at local schools throughout the community.
Our program combines academic support, enrichment, physical activity and opportunities to build friendships and character.
Welcome and Connect
After a full day at school, children need time to transition. Our welcoming activities help kids settle in, connect with their peers and feel a sense of belonging.
Children also receive healthy snacks, including whole grains, fruit and water, while participating in social-emotional learning activities that encourage empathy, inclusion, compassion and critical thinking.
Brain Power Hour
Homework doesn’t have to follow your child all the way home. Dedicated homework and academic support time gives students an opportunity to complete assignments and reinforce what they’re learning in school.
Self-guided academic learning centers and support from campus-certified teachers help students build good study habits, organization skills and confidence in their ability to learn.
Explore, Create and Discover
Learning comes to life through hands-on activities focused on STEM and literacy. Children have opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics and reading concepts while connecting what they learn in school to the world around them.
Enrichment activities introduce children to music, art, theatre, crafts, global awareness, service learning and character education. These experiences encourage creativity, help children discover new interests and give them opportunities to see what they can do.
Energize
Kids need to move! Our Energize activities give children plenty of opportunities for physical activity through age-appropriate games and active play.
Using the CATCH Kids Club curriculum, activities can take place outdoors, in gyms, cafeterias or on playgrounds. Along the way, children develop physical skills while practicing teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship.
More Than Care—A Place to Belong
Whether a child spends the day at YMCA Early Care or joins us after school, our goal is the same: to create an environment where children feel safe, supported and encouraged to grow.
Our staff understands that children thrive when they have consistent routines, positive relationships and opportunities to learn in different ways. Ongoing professional development helps our team stay informed about best practices in early childhood education and youth development.
We also believe families are an important part of a child’s success. Communication and family engagement help create a partnership between the YMCA and parents, ensuring children receive consistent support at home and in our programs.
