The YMCA of Greater Houston is proud to strengthen its partnership with the Houston Texans by expanding its Flag Football program for youth boys and girls ages 4-15. As part of NFL FLAG, the YMCA Houston Texans Flag Football Program will provide young athletes with an opportunity to learn fundamental life skills, teamwork and game strategies in a supportive, engaging environment. The YMCA of Greater Houston aims to enroll 1,000 participants across 17 YMCA locations throughout the Greater Houston area, increasing community access to a program that fosters a sense of achievement, connection and belonging. Registration is open and ends October 20. Practice starts the week of October 28, with the first game on November 9 and the last day on December 21.
“Only 5% of youth ages 5 – 18 get the recommended amount of exercise. It is important that children stay active, especially for aspiring athletes. Through practices and games, kids will learn sportsmanship and the values necessary to be successful in life,” said Stephen Ives, president and CEO, YMCA of Greater Houston. “Our partnership with the Houston Texans extends our reach and enriches our offerings, helping us achieve our goals and ensure individuals and families, regardless of age, income, or background, have access to the resources they need to thrive.”
The YMCA of Greater Houston and the Houston Texans have partnered for over 17 years, driven by a shared passion for empowering youth and a commitment to bringing impactful programs to the community. The two organizations will continue their partnership with the goal of expanding the program across the Greater Houston area over the next three years. By combining the YMCA’s extensive network of 21 locations and the Houston Texans’ brand recognition, expertise, and top-tier sports programs, this initiative aims to elevate the flag football experience citywide.
“We are proud to work with the YMCA of Greater Houston to expand our reach and enhance its flag football program together,” said Hannah McNair, Vice President of the Houston Texans Foundation. “We believe in the power of football and the opportunity the game we love creates for young athletes. The sport of flag football is growing in popularity and our goal is to reduce barriers so all young boys and girls have access to play. We look forward to seeing the impact our partnership will have on the next generation of H-Town athletes.”
Backed by NFL FLAG – The Largest Youth Flag Football League in the Country
The Houston Texans Flag Football program is powered by NFL FLAG, the largest youth flag football league in the country. Dedicated to empowering youth athletes and fostering a lifelong passion for flag football, NFL FLAG leagues are non-contact, giving boys and girls of all abilities a chance to develop fundamental football skills in a positive, inclusive environment. NFL FLAG also provides a pathway for female athletes to play in college and an outlet for tackle athletes to compete in the offseason. As NFL FLAG grows, it remains a place where every boy and girl can play football.
A Touchdown Program for Every Young Athlete
The program is open to both girls and boys, reflecting the Houston Texans and YMCA of Greater Houston’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all young athletes to enjoy and thrive in flag football and other sports. Players will benefit from expert coaching, practice drills, and interactive sessions that boost their confidence on and off the field.
Exclusive YMCA and Houston Texans Uniforms
Thanks to the strong partnership between the YMCA and the Houston Texans, youth will receive an NFL Flag Uniform Kit, which includes an exclusive Texans-designed jersey, shorts, performance sleeves, Texans gloves and a team flag belt.
Make an Impact: Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer coaching roles are available, offering individuals the chance to help make YMCA youth sports possible and inspire young athletes by fostering participation and sportsmanship. The Y provides all the necessary resources, including a Houston Texans coach shirt, to ensure every volunteer coach is prepared for success.
Affordable Access: Program Costs and Scholarships
The program cost varies based on location. Scholarships through the YMCA are available to ensure that all young participants, regardless of their financial situation, can develop into confident, happy and healthy adults. Playing sports has many health, educational, and psychosocial benefits, and the YMCA is committed to empowering youth to help them live fulfilling lives.
