Celebrating National Learning Week at the Y!
National Summer Learning Week, celebrated each July, promotes programs and resources that keep kids safe, healthy, and growing both academically and socially. At the Y, we believe that all youth have potential and deserve the support and resources needed to succeed. This year, we’re participating in National Learning Week by highlighting our After School Care programs, which provide students with a safe and supportive environment to learn and grow.
What is the Opportunity Gap?
The opportunity gap refers to the differing access to quality education, resources, and experiences available to students, resulting in varying educational outcomes. This gap most significantly impacts underserved and low-income families. A significant contributor to the opportunity gap is summer learning loss, also known as the “summer slide.” While most students progress at a similar pace during the school year, those without access to educational activities during the summer tend to lose academic skills and knowledge, which contributes to the opportunity gap.
Bridging the Opportunity Gap: How YMCA’s After School Programs Prevent Summer Learning Loss
All children have immense potential, yet some may not receive the opportunities they need to reach it. Research shows that young people from underserved communities often begin school unprepared and fall behind their peers, creating the opportunity gap. The YMCA recognizes the importance of equipping all children with the opportunities and resources they need to succeed and is committed to closing this gap.
How the Y is Fighting Summer Learning Loss
The YMCA After School programs are designed to provide young people with the resources and support they need to succeed. We offer a wide range of activities that engage students in social, emotional, and academic development. Some of these activities include enrichment, skill development, and exploration meant to build important life skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and empathy. At the Y, we put your child first, and it shows in our results. In the YMCA’s After School Programs across the US, 71% of students improved their social-emotional skills, and 99% of caregivers agreed that the program helped increase their child’s learning skills.
