MLK Day of Service

MLK Day of Service is a federal holiday observed as a National Day of Service. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to issues we face everyday in our communities

On Monday, January 15, YMCAs throughout the Greater Houston Area will host service events to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. We invite you to join us in serving the community. View our list of available projects below.

Volunteers will be supporting GardenKids of Kemah for their Annual Day of Service honoring Martin Luther King Jr. ALL AGES are welcome and encouraged to come enjoy the garden. Volunteers will plant trees and spread mulch.

Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA
Volunteers will be running a food distribution sites at the Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA and Willow Creek Apartment Homes. Duties include unloading and organizing food pallets, sorting foods, breaking down boxes, loading cars with food, registering community members that receive food, maintaining clean work stations and helping with clean up. Please note: The Willow Creek Apartment site is open to Willow Creek Apartment residents only. Community volunteers should sign-up for the Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA location.

Volunteers will support Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Montgomery County with prep work for bed build. SHP mission is to ensure no child sleeps on the floor.

Weekley Family YMCA
In partnership with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Weekley will be hosting a blood drive. The GCRBC Donor Coach will be in the parking lot. Register for your time slot here.
Also, we are happy to partner with Interfaith Ministries to make greeting cards for the Meals on Wheels program and assemble pet toys and treats for their Animeals program. Lastly, we will be assembling Welcome Kits for newcomers with YMCA International Services. These events will be held in the Weekley multipurpose room.
