World’s largest swim lesson

Swimming Lessons Save Lives

Join the YMCA of Greater Houston for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL)—a global event dedicated to raising awareness about water safety and the life-saving importance of learning to swim.

Launched in 2010 by the World Waterpark Association, WLSL brings together aquatic facilities around the world—from community pools to major waterparks—for one shared purpose: helping prevent drowning through swim education.

Why It Matters

Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children:

  • #1 cause of death for U.S. children ages 1–4
  • #2 cause for children ages 5–14

The good news: formal swim lessons make a measurable difference.

  • Participation in swim lessons can reduce drowning risk by up to 88% for young children (American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • Yet 56% of Americans lack basic swimming skills (American Red Cross)

That’s why events like formal swim lessons are critical—to ensure more children and families gain access to water safety education.
